My EndoBridge Story

“I am a specialist in the field of endocrinology in 20180430_115348_001Eskisehir Osmangazi University. Our clinic has a wide spectrum of Endocrine diseases with hundreds of patients. Although I have a lot of experience in Endocrinology I wondered about the practice of clinics in other countries. Our university has a scholarship program for this purpose. Last year when we were in Endobridge meeting I met Assistant ProfessorPriyathama Vellanki, MDand I told her about my will for having experience in other countries. And then she told me that her clinic has an observership programme . She gave me communication info. After that I contacted her and with her reference I was admitted to Emory University School of Medicine Division of Endocrinology, Metabolism & Lipids and worked there with  Prof. Guillermo E. Umpierrez, MD and his colleagues for three months as an observer.

I think the international participation of Endobridge is an opportunity for Endocrine specialists to collaborate and work together. I feel myself lucky for having such a chance.”

My EndoBridge Story

As an internal medicine resident, I always wanted to have a opportunity to make an international observership in a reputable academic medical center.

I have attended EndoBridge 2016 where I presented a case about MEN 1 syndrome and had the chance to listen conferences from the leading experts of endocrinology. I was really impressed by the conference named “The “omics” of adrenocortical cancer” which was presented by Professor Jerome Bertherat from Paris Descartes University. I sent a letter to Professor Bertherat requesting an opportunity to be an observer in Department of Endocrinology. I was accepted and spend two months in the Endocrinology Department of Cochin Hospital in Paris.

During my observerhip, i attended clinical activities in conventional hospitalization and daily hospital units. In consultation unit, i had the chance to join Professor Bertherat and learn from his practice and experiences. I also attended the weekly journal club of the endocrinology department and the weekly multidisciplinary conference organized by the endocrinology department. Additionally, i had the chance to visit the research laboratory which is located in Cochin Institute, meet with the team of Professor Bertherat and listen about their studies. During my stay, I also joined the bi-annual meeting dedicated to Hypothalamus, Metabolism and Endocrinology, on April 5th, 2018. At the end of my stay, i made a short presentation summarizing my Cochin experience.

My observerhip in Paris Cochin Hospital was a great experience for me to expand my knowledge and widen my vision.

EndoBridge Bridged me

In 2015, in the first year of my endocrinology fellowship, I attended Endobridge 2015. It was my first time in Endobridge. As an endocrinologist who has few experience in the field, I learned a lot in terms of both translational and clinical endocrinology. I think one of the most important sessions of this meeting is the interactive case discussions. In these meetings, I had the opportunity to discuss interesting clinical cases with the experts of the field. At the end of the adrenal session, I met with Prof. DrRichard Ross from Sheffield University/UK who was amazed me with his perspective. I learned that he and his crew were about the beginning of a project about leptin. I asked him to involve this project and he accepted. A few months later with the grants of UEMS and The Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Turkey, I was in Sheffield/UK. I had stayed in Sheffield for six months. First time in my life I had studied in a molecular biology laboratory and I think this experience has affected my clinical practice and matured my perspective. Our work accepted as a poster presentation in ECE 2017. I would like to thank UEMS, The Society of Endocrinology and Metabolism of Turkey, Prof. DrRichard Ross and especially to Prof. Dr. Bulent Okan Yildiz. I hope in the future, Endobridge still bridges many endocrinologists from many parts of the world. #myendobridgestory
